One in a Million Award recipient: Home Grown Cafe
Where they are multiplying good: Newark, Delaware
How they are multiplying good: They are One in a Million. This Newark, Delaware restaurant has found a way to stay afloat while helping during the current COVID-19 pandemic. In March, owner Sasha Aber, launched a GoFundMe Page to raise contributions to feed the hospital units and healthcare workers. The average donation is between $10 and $25. In just one week in April they delivered 255 lunches to the Christiana Care hospital in Newark, the Christiana Care hospital in Wilmington and the Christiana Care Emergency Care facility in Middletown. Currently, over 2,400 meals have been brought to our Christiana Care workers.
The Adopt-a-Unit fund has been a win-win-win in three different ways. It has helped to keep my staff employed. It has given our customers and the community the chance to extend their compassion to the healthcare workers who risk their lives every day, and it gives our healthcare workers a healthy meal, along with a note when we drop off the food that says that their meal has been made possible by the community’s generosity. Among the many departments the Home Grown Café has delivered to in the ChristianaCare system include blood bank and pathology units; constables; critical care and medical units; security teams; testing facilities; occupational therapists; front desk staff, valet and patient escorts; respiratory therapy units; mobile COVID-19 testing laboratories; pharmacies; cardiac and cardiology units; infection prevention centers; lab processing units; employee health services teams; labor and delivery units and housekeeping staff.
